In 2008 Apple did not produce any netbooks and publicly denied any plans to produce them. But since I wanted that kind of device I bought a Lenovo S10e and was able to install Snow Leopard 10.6 that I aquired for about 25,- Euros, i.e. to transform the nice device into a "Mac".

Trotz Netbook-Boom weigerte sich Apple 2008 ein Netbook zu produzieren, also kaufte ich mir ein Lenovo S10e, weil ich unbedingt ein Netbook haben wollte. Undzwar eines, auf dem möglichst OS X laufen würde. Mit ein bißchen Frickelei gelang es mir am Ende, die extra für diesen Zweck gekaufte DVD mit Snow Leopard zu installieren und das S10e in einen Mac zu transformieren.

However, now my girlfriend bought an Asus eeePC X101 asked me if I could manage to install OS X for her. Since there are so many netbooks available now it is hard to find how-to's. People just make no efforts anymore to try or tell others how they managed (or failed) to install SL or even Lion.

That's why I will start to collect the information in the net and also to report on my efforts to transform the eeePC X101 into a Mac. I set up a new blog for this intention. Whoever is interested in netbooks with OS X is welcome on

Wie dem auch sei, nachdem meine Freundin ein Asus eeePC X101 gekauft hat, fragte sie mich, ob ich nicht OS X darauf zum Laufen bringen könnte. Dummerweise ist der Markt für Netbooks nicht nur gesättigt, es gibt mittlerweile einfach auch schon zuviele verschiedene Modelle, so dass sich kaum noch jemand die Mühe macht, entweder OS X auf allen zu installieren oder aber zu publizieren, wie er/sie das geschafft hat.

Run OS X on your G560

Zuallererst: Ja, es geht.

Aber man muss wissen wie.

First of all: Yes, it works.

But you have to know how to do it.

Man kann die Mac DVD im Gegensatz zu anderen Maschinen nicht einfach auf dem Lenovo G560 booten. Ehrlicherweise muss man auch mal herausstellen, dass das BIOS dieses Notebooks wirklich sehr dürftig ist. Keine Ahnung, was sich Lenovo dabei gedacht hat, falls es sich selbst als Premiummarke sehen will (Immerhin hat es die Produktion von IBM übernommen, die bis zuletzt einen sehr guten Ruf hatte.), aber das BIOS dieses Gerätes ist eines der schlechtesten, das ich je sah. Es lässt sich auch definitiv kein EFI nachträglich irgendwann daraus machen, behindert einen aber auch, durch Tricks soetwas auf dem Ding zu simulieren.

With the Lenovo G560 i3 you can not just boot from the Snow Leopard DVD and that's it. It's not impossible but actually quite tricky. I'll show you how. The BIOS of the machine is, however, the poorest I ever saw. That explains partly why it is a bit difficult to install OS X on it. No EFI, but that was clear from the beginning. However, usual laptops from premium brands have a sufficient BIOS that you can manipulate and make things work with MacOS.

Im Gegensatz zu bspw. dem Lenovo IdeaPad S10e lässt sich die Installations-DVD von OS X tatsächlich vom DVD-Laufwerk aus booten und starten, wenn man ein zwingend notwendiges Utility dazu benutzt: iBoot oder Empire-EFI, etc. - ich empfehle dennoch, den Umweg über ein Image via eine externe HD zu gehen, weil das einfach schneller geht. Gerade am Anfang, wenn man noch keinen genauen Plan hat bzw. das Gerät und das System noch seinen sich verändernden Wünschen anpasen will, muss man u.U. ein paar Mal die Installation wiederholen, dann zahlt sich der Aufwand definitiv aus, weil es unglaublich viel Zeit spart - und im Übrigen besser funktioniert, weil DVD-Lesefehler nicht passieren können.

Contrary to the Lenovo IdeaPad S10e the G560 can boot directly from the retail DVD of OS X if you use a utility like iBoot or Empire-EFI or other. However, I recommend using an image via external HD because it's just much faster. You have to consider that you may have to install the system several times until you have exactly what you want. For example I partitioned equally in the beginning, i.e. each OS got the same amount of space. Linux now gets only 100 Gigz on my internal HD. Today Windows just has 20 Gigz because I only use W7 for firmware updates or changes in the BIOS because most companies code their crap in Windows software. Or you may have to change GUID to GRUB or MBR ...

Wichtig: Man braucht ein Original von SL. Das kann und sollte man sich entweder online oder im Laden kaufen. Kostet entweder 29,- US-Dollar (plus Steuer) oder aber ab 25,- Euro z.B. bei MediaBlöd im Angebot. Es geistern zwar immer noch Raubkopien oder sog. "Distributionen" (manipulierte Systeme, die auch entsprechende "Wasserzeichen" oder "Trademarks" der Urheber haben) im Netz herum, aber ich rate davon ab, nicht nur weil die Raubkopien illegal sind und die Distris nicht unbedingt Vorteile haben, sondern weil diese mit hoher Wahrscheinlichkeit nur teilweise funktionieren werden, da sie entweder für ein spezielles Notebook oder den eigenen Bedürfnissen angepasst wurden und somit u.U. wichtige Treiber fehlen. Kurzum: Es ist den Aufwand nicht wert.

Most important: You need to buy an original retail DVD of Snow Leopard. You can order it online or buy it in an Apple Store for about 29,- USD or 25,- Euros. A copy from the net is illegal and those so called "Distributions" as an alternative have serious disadvantages and will probably only work on certain designed machines and lack drivers. Besides you risk to get a manipulated OS that may work for unknown guys somewhere ... There is a Russian version for G460 and G560 on the net that has minimum functions since you don't know the Admin password - and who knows what kind of Trojan Horse you get, though this is highly unlikely for now ...

So just forget it, it's not worth downloading it.

Sobald die Ingredienzen bereitstehen, kann man loslegen. Dazu braucht man also:

1. eine original Installations-DVD von OS X (unbedingt retail, keine beigelegte von einem Mac!)
2. einen Bootloader
3. die passenden Parameter für das G560 i3
