OS X Installation auf dem / on Lenovo G560 i3

As indicated before you need to use the parameters that are only for the Core i3 2x2.26 GHz.
Don't use any other since it won't work. Why is that?

In computing, the clock multiplier (CPU multiplier or bus/core ratio) measures the ratio of an internal CPU clock rate to the externally supplied clock. A CPU with a 10x multiplier will thus see 10 internal cycles for every external clock cycle. For example, a system with an external clock of 133 MHz and a 10x clock multiplier will have an internal CPU clock of 1.33 GHz. Because, 10 x 133 = 1330 (1.33).
How to determine the bus ratio:
Most all new Intel CPU’s have an external clock of 133 MHz. If you have a Core i3-350m 2.26 GHz processor you will need to change your clock speed, 2.26 into 2260, just remove the decimal and add “0”'s to the end to make it a 4 digit number (2.26 > 2260. 2.5 > 2500). So the mathematical equation will look like this: 2260 / 133 = 16.99248120300752, rounding your quotient means: 17.
Don't use any other number since this is the special one for this i3.

After using the parameters you start the installation routine of OS X. This will bring you to the start menu and you determine the language. After that you'll enter the options menu: check what you want and uncheck what you do not (for example all the languages you are sure never will use anyway). Of course you can check everything - it is just a matter of space on your HD.

Now before installing OS X you better go to disc utility and format the HD the way you want. Here you have to decide what partition table you want to use: OS X uses GUID, Windows uses MBR and Linux GRUB. Most people report that using MBR helps installing Windooze parallel to OS X. However, sometimes the OS X installation program does not install OS X if chosen MBR, sometimes it does - I haven't figured out why. If you want to be sure (and install Win, too) you take MBR, if you dump Win, take GUID before partitioning.

After having chosen your method you go back and start the installation. From now on the program takes over: For best results use a retail 10.6.3, if not possible you can also use (retail) 10.6.0 and upgrade afterwards.
After successful installation everything will work except microfone, webcam and ethernet. For sound (internal loudspeakers) you have to activate it in the system preferences.

Now you should have changed the G560 into a 95% Macintosh.

In the last part I'll show you how to activate the not functioning parts of this laptop.

As already said you can boot the installation DVD of SL with a boot disc that includes either EFI-Empire or iBoot but this won't get you very far if you don't know the special parameters of the G560 because after the very time consuming booting of the DVD (or the shorter boot from the HD/USB-Stick) you get stuck with the starting screen of OS X. Everything is extremely sloooow!
The reason for this is the "lacking" driver for the graphics card. The NVIDIA 310M is not automatically recognized by the installation program though you have the right resolution on your screen. Theoretically you could go on but after the 3 option you will finally lose control over the pad/the mouse and can't hit the "Yes"-button etc.

To avoid getting stuck you have to know the exact parameters for the Core i3 CPU, i.e the so called "busratio" which you have to calculate. For the i3 with 2.26GHz this is: 17.
To keep going after the start from the bootloader CD you type in:
-x -v busratio=17

and press return.
Needless to say that by standard a US keyboard is set, so you have to find the fitting keys in your own language first.
Now the installation process will start and after some minutes your starting screen will appear in the right resolution and you can begin the setup by choosing your language. Keep in mind that the standard is of course USA, you can change it in the top right corner.

Next time: prepare the HD and setup for the final installation.

Run OS X on your G560

Zuallererst: Ja, es geht.
Aber man muss wissen wie.

First of all: Yes, it works.
But you have to know how to do it.

With the Lenovo G560 i3 you can not just boot from the Snow Leopard DVD and that's it. It's not impossible but actually quite tricky. I'll show you how. The BIOS of the machine is, however, the poorest I ever saw. That explains partly why it is a bit difficult to install OS X on it. No EFI, but that was clear from the beginning. However, usual laptops from premium brands have a sufficient BIOS that you can manipulate and make things work with MacOS.

Contrary to the Lenovo IdeaPad S10e the G560 can boot directly from the retail DVD of OS X if you use a utility like iBoot or Empire-EFI or other. However, I recommend using an image via external HD because it's just much faster. You have to consider that you may have to install the system several times until you have exactly what you want. For example I partitioned equally in the beginning, i.e. each OS got the same amount of space. Linux now gets only 100 Gigz on my internal HD. Today Windows just has 20 Gigz because I only use W7 for firmware updates or changes in the BIOS because most companies code their crap in Windows software. Or you may have to change GUID to GRUB or MBR ...

Most important: You need to buy an original retail DVD of Snow Leopard. You can order it online or buy it in an Apple Store for about 29,- USD or 25,- Euros. A copy from the net is illegal and those so called "Distributions" as an alternative have serious disadvantages and will probably only work on certain designed machines and lack drivers. Besides you risk to get a manipulated OS that may work for unknown guys somewhere ... There is a Russian version for G460 and G560 on the net that has minimum functions since you don't know the Admin password - and who knows what kind of Trojan Horse you get, though this is highly unlikely for now ...
So just forget it, it's not worth downloading it.

Sobald die Ingredienzen bereitstehen, kann man loslegen. Dazu braucht man also:

When you finally have the ingredients you can start. You will need
  1. a original retail DVD of OS X (not a DVD from a purchased Mac!)
  2. a bootloader
  3. the exact parameters for the G560 i3
In the next article I will show you the detailed steps for the installation.

Der neue Blog - The New Blog: Lenovo Laptops and Netbooks

Well, it started with a dream ...

Two years ago I was considering to buy a nice netbook because I just had enough of carrying around my heavy PowerBook - that had once been not only the state of the art but also the lightest laptop on earth. Then.

Damals.

I would've had preferred a Netbook from Apple but they refused to build such a thing. I don't know why. Maybe because they had enough money, maybe because they are so clever. So finally I decided to buy a Lenovo S10e - because I had heard it probably could run OS X ...

This blog will especially take care of the Lenovo G560 Core i3.
